Without further ado, here are my top 4 tips for meeting people and making friends while solo traveling:⁣

1️⃣ Use Meetup and Couchsurfing to join group hangouts - these apps are used internationally and are an awesome way to find fellow travelers as well as locals in the area! I've met many people who I still stay in contact with today through Meetup and Couchsurfing. 🛋⁣
⁣
2️⃣ Stay in hostels - solo travelers and people looking to make friends often stay in hostels! Pick hostels that have open hangout spots and common areas to increase your chances of meeting people. People will often mention this in the ratings if it's easy to meet people because of a hostel's layout or activities that they offer. 🏨⁣

3️⃣ Go on pub crawls - yes, socializing most often happens around drinks, so join a pub crawl that your hostel is offering and make lots of friends! Sometimes you can also find out about these on free walking tours or by searching for pub crawls in your city. 🍻⁣

4️⃣ Simply sit down next to someone at a bar or your hostel common area and just strike up a conversation - yes, it can be awkward and anxiety-inducing at first, but chances are that many people are also looking to make friends while you're traveling! They will welcome that you made the first move, I promise 😉⁣

I can't believe it was already 3 years ago that I was in Petra 😮⁣

If you've been following me, you've probably heard about the two solo backpackers I met in Greece a few weeks before who spontaneously invited me to come along with them to Egypt, Israel, and Jordan... it was too good to pass up! ✈⁣
⁣
I delayed the start of my summer internship at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin for two weeks while I scrambled to make plans last-minute after my semester of studying abroad in the Netherlands... typical me 😅⁣
⁣
Even though it was during Ramadan in the middle of the summer, a combo that made it particularly difficult to withstand the desert heat, it was truly a trip I will never forget! ☀⁣
⁣
One of those moments I'll never forget is when we went to Petra in Jordan. We hiked down into a canyon for about half an hour until the famous Treasury suddenly peeked out from behind the rocks! 👀⁣
⁣
Seeing these ancient yet sophisticated structures and learning about the civilization that built them was so fascinating - I think it was this trip that really encouraged me to look up the history of where I go before I leave, and I make sure to do that now for every trip that I take! 📕⁣

Here's what has happened so far since the world 𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗨𝗣 and 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗞𝗘 𝗢𝗨𝗧 against the senseless murder of black and brown people:⁣

✊🏾 Minneapolis has committed to dismantle its police entirely, focusing on developing a plan for policing with the community⁣
⁣
✊🏾 Much NYPD funding has been redirected towards youth and social services instead, and section 50-A has been repealed so that the public now has access to disciplinary records of police officers⁣
⁣
✊🏾 Confederate statues have been toppled across the USA and today NASCAR officially banned any Confederate flags and symbols from their events⁣
⁣
✊🏾 One of the co-founders of Reddit resigned from the board to make room for a black candidate instead⁣
⁣
✊🏾 Cities nationwide are banning the chokehold, no-knock warrants, and tear gas⁣
⁣
𝗬𝗘𝗦, these are things that should have happened long ago, and 𝗡𝗢, they can never undo the centuries of atrocities that have been committed against people of color - but look at what happens when we take a stand! 🎇⁣

TRAVEL STORY: This photo was captured right as the sun rose over the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt after a 6-hour hike up Mount Sinai in the dead of night 🇪🇬⁣

It all started at 1 am, when my two backpacker friends I had met just 2 weeks before in Greece and I were picked up in Dahab by a local driver to bring us to the foot of Mount Sinai 🚗⁣
⁣
While we drove through the quiet desolation of the expansive Egyptian desert, I had to have faith and trust that we were being brought where we needed to be 🙏⁣
⁣
When we arrived, the parking lot lit up the various guides and mules offering their services. We knew finding the path in the darkness would be hard otherwise, so we chose a guide and set on our way to scale the mountain, lit only by our flashlights and the full moon above 🌝⁣
⁣
The climb was often steep, but we enjoyed the aid of the centuries-old steps beneath us built by monks, and plodded on through the darkness with the hope of a new dawn to greet us at the summit ⛰⁣
⁣
When we finally arrived at the top, it was hard to deny the spiritual feeling that was almost palpable there, and we sat upon the dusty rocks, waiting with bated breath for the sun to finally peak its friendly rays above the horizon 🌄⁣
⁣
And when it did - it was almost as if we were seeing the sunrise for the very first time. The colors appeared more saturated; the rays, brighter; the warmth, hotter. 🔥⁣

Sometimes I think our times of struggle are times that life gives us a dose of exactly what we need 💡⁣

I believe that every time we face a big challenge, it's an opportunity to become even closer to our best selves in the process ✨⁣

The skills we gain and the lessons we learn along the way are always helping us become better, stronger, and smarter so that every day, we are better than the day before 💪🏼⁣

When I came to this realization the other day, everything started to make sense 🤔⁣

My challenging relationship that recently had to come to a challenging end? That was exactly what I needed to learn about my independence, my worth, and when it's time to let go 👫⁣
⁣
The challenge of little to no human contact for the past 3 months of quarantine since I live alone? This has been exactly the solitude I needed to gather my thoughts, regroup, and learn to value human contact in a different way that's finally helping me overcome my social anxiety 💖⁣
⁣
The challenge now of preparing for and applying to grad school (again)? Now I know this is exactly what I need to push the boundaries of what I believe I'm capable of and prove that with consistent dedication and persistence, anything is possible 🙏🏼⁣

I tend to shy away from adding things to a conversation when it feels like I'm not saying or contributing anything new, but now I refuse to use that as an excuse 🙅🏼⁣

So many have been so eloquent over the past weeks when speaking out about the murder of George Floyd and countless other POC, so while I might not say anything new or better than others, it's important to say 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 nonetheless 🗣⁣

This is an important lesson - as a white person of privilege, I need to 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 when standing up and speaking out against injustice, and I encourage you to do the same from your own position of privilege 📣⁣

We will all mess up, so 𝗹𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲! 📘⁣
⁣
I recognize that I cannot even begin to understand the challenges that come with being a person of color today, so I stand here today as an 𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 as a platform to help others, and continuing to learn and 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡 to others' experiences 👂🏼⁣
⁣
This is how we learn - 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 again and again until we get it right ✅⁣
⁣
So let's keep 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚, & 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 until we get it right and real change actually happens - not until the "trend" dies a week later 💁🏼⁣

Would you rather visit a new country/place every time that you travel, or focus on going only to places that you loved the first time around? ✈⁣

I have such a hard time answering this question, as I do admittedly love every time that I get to add a country to my running list of countries that I've visited! 😍⁣⁣
⁣
However, there is something uniquely special in a different way when you get to revisit someplace you love, and see how it has changed, as well as all the wonderful ways it has stayed the same 🌎⁣⁣
⁣
For example, I've already been to Santorini, but I would love to go back to experience the more luxurious side of things, since before, I was traveling there on a budget! 💰⁣⁣
